Things you should avoid saying during the holidays to someone who is grieving!
Usually, the holidays are the happiest time of year for many. For others who are grieving the loss of a loved one, it can be the absolute worst time of year. Friends, family and loved ones typically come together to celebrate; however finding the right words to say to someone who is grieving can be challenging. Often times when we we’re trying to help, we actually make thigs worse.
Here are a few phrases that are suggested to avoid when speaking to someone who is grieving during the holidays: “They’re in a better place now”, “Be strong” and of course, “They wouldn’t want you to be sad”. These statements can spiral someone to darker place than they were originally. Instead, try to make the laugh, or bring back fond memories of their loved ones. That act of kindness will be appreciated and never forgotten.
