You should start your New Years Resolutions TODAY!
It’s that time of year, when you’re probably writing down your New Years Resolution for 2023. Have you ever wondered why keeping the resolutions are so hard? Well, I’m here to help you. Most resolutions start with generic- non specific goals like “lose weight” or “write a book. Typically, these kinds of resolutions aren’t useful because they’re too vague to be useful or simply too hard to get done. Studies indicate resolutions work best when they are specific, measurable, relevant and time-bound. One way to give yourself an advantage is to start practicing your New Year’s resolutions right now.
According to the NY Times, many people take on too much, too fast. Resolutions like not eating carbs or running 5 miles a day, beginning the month after the holidays, can be so ambitious that you’re setting yourself up for failure. Another reason why people give up on their resolutions is because they want an immediate reward for long term goals. How many people have given up on a diet because they didn’t see significant weight loss the first week?
By starting your resolutions early, it gives you enough time to determine if your goals are realistic, and if they’re not, you still have time to make adjustments before January 1st. Also, like an athlete, it’s always good to warm up before you begin your endeavor. Now, you won’t be starting from scratch on January 1st and you’ve gotten over the worst part; starting.
Another bright spot on starting early is if you decide to binge during the holiday period, you’re just practicing your New Years resolutions. You still have time to enjoy your holiday treats before the main event starts January 1st, your New Years Resolutions!
By the way, don’t be afraid if you slip up, just never give up!
