Wearing Blackface is a part of holiday traditions in the Netherlands!
One of the quickest ways to get cancelled in America, is for non-Blacks to wear blackface. Apparently, that’s not the case in the Netherlands. As a matter of fact, they have an annual “Black Pete” festival where White people wear blackface and Afro wigs to celebrate the companion of St. Nickolas, Zwarte Piet or “Black Pete”. Pete usually appears as a blackface character with large gold earrings and exaggerated lips. This festival lasts two months during November and December.
Everyone gets involved in the tradition. Stores stock up on “Black Pete” costumes and adults dress up and visit children’s schools. It’s almost hard to believe that this goes on in 2022. Check out the full story on our Kiss 107.1 Facebook page and leave your comments there!
