“The Lion King” Rules The Weekend Box Office
Long Live The King…
Disney’s CGI remake of The Lion King scored big at this weekend’s box office, earning a record-shattering $185 million domestically and a staggering $531 million worldwide. The film grabbed the biggest opening for any PG rated film, as well as the biggest non-inflated opening for any Disney film outside of Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm properties. It also beat out the final Harry Potter film for the biggest opening for a film released in the month of July.
Joining The Lion King in the top 3 are holdovers. Sony & Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Far From Home landed at the #2 spot with $21 million in its third week in theaters, bringing the overall domestic haul to $319.7 million. Rounding out the top 3 is another Disney & Pixar’s Toy Story 4, which earned $14.6 million in its fifth week, with an overall domestic earning of $375.5 million.
