People of color be careful; diabetes may be on the rise!

During the holiday season, it’s not uncommon to throw caution to the wind when it comes to dieting and throw down on endless amounts of cookies, candy, cakes and other treats. We also tend to let our kids have more treats than usual, because it’s the holidays after all. New research show that the number of people under 20 with type 2 diabetes in the US may increase nearly 675% by 2060. Research also shows an increase of up to 65% in young people with type 1 diabetes.

People of color like Blacks, Hispanics and Asians are likely to have a higher burden of type 2 diabetes than White people. This research should serve as a reality check for all of us, especially our younger population which tends to be healthiest demographic. Moving into the new year, it’s important to consistently watch what you eat and to get some form of exercise regimen implemented, even if it’s just walking 30 minutes per day.

Your family and friends need you around, so start preparing for the future today, by making better choices for your health.
