Shine Bright Saginaw Mural Project

December 31, 2023

Shine Bright Saginaw Mural Project

Help turn these rusty silos into the 2nd-largest mural in the United States and the premier community art space in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Welcome to the Shine Bright Saginaw team, where we will turn a blighted silo complex into one of America’s greatest public works of art. The Shine Bright Saginaw Mural Project is looking to address several community needs by transforming industrial blight into community beautification, creating a public arts and culture space, improving the Saginaw Riverfront, generating tourism that will support local businesses, and creating a new backdrop for some of Saginaw’s most important community assets.

The Shine Bright Saginaw Mural Project is led by project leaders Mark Flegenheimer (President & CEO, Michigan Sugar, retired) and Larry Preston (Co-Founder, President and CEO, Tri-Star Trust Bank, retired) and made possible through the Saginaw Community Foundation. We need your help to secure a matching grant from the MEDC and cross the finish line to completing this great work of art and new public space!

The Long Story Short

Mark Flegenheimer visited his alma mater, DePauw University, and found the tired-looking grain silos that had greeted campus visitors for decades had been transformed into stunning silo murals. After experiencing the dramatic change in this Indiana community, he was determined to have murals painted on the unsightly grain silos that greet people entering Saginaw. With Mark’s inspiration, the Shine Bright committee reached out to communities that have painted beautiful silo murals learning what to do to be successful. And in some ways, more importantly, what not to do.

With your support, we can bring world-renowned muralist Okuda San Miguel to Saginaw to create a beautiful work of art that will transform the landscape of Downtown and Old Town, greeting everyone who enters the gateway to Saginaw.

The property surrounding the mural will become a place for artists to gather and create visual and performing arts for the Great Lakes Bay community. This will serve as a space that plays host to:

 • Art Festivals
 • Cultural Festivals
 • Concerts
 • Community Theater
 • Plein Air Painting
 • Public Art Exhibitions
 • and much more.

This community space will be located between the silo mural and the riverfront and will feature:

 • a green space
 • a staging space
 • amenities include trash receptacles to keep the space clean & green
 • benches for people to sit and admire the mural and surrounding space and ample parking space.

The entire space will enjoy beautiful views of the mural and Saginaw River in Old Town Saginaw. A fund will be nurtured at the Saginaw Community Foundation that will continue into the future to support upkeep and property maintenance, etc.

What we are creating…

The big picture with the Shine Bright Mural Project is COMMUNITY! It’s the Saginaw and Great Lakes Bay Communities that will directly benefit from this project. Local small businesses in Old Town and Downtown will benefit from increased visitors and patronage.

Local artists and non-profits will have a community art space that will generate community programming and events.

The Saginaw Riverfront will benefit by having an iconic art feature that will become the focal point of the Saginaw River. Community assets located in Celebration Square and Old Town will benefit from the beautiful mural backdrop in stark contrast to the dilapidated industrial blight that currently serves as the backdrop to places like the Andersen Enrichment Center, Garber Courts, YMCA, Boy’s and Girls Club, Splash Park, Skate Park, and more.

The project site will serve as our communities’ beacon or Town Square of Arts and Culture. Being home to America’s second-largest mural will be a point of pride for our communities and will further brand Saginaw and the Great Lakes Bay Region as a destination for public art. With your help, we can make this vision a reality for Saginaw. Proceeds from this campaign will support the following items:

 • Building Preparation and Priming
 • Demolition
 • Artist Fees
 • Paint
 • Landscaping
 • Miscellaneous Needs (Lift, Housing, etc.)
 • Endowment (Future preservation, operation, and maintenance of the mural and grounds)

Help create an iconic feature for Saginaw and our community that will inspire arts and culture in our region for generations to come!
