Members of the Great Lakes Bay community are invited to participate in a community read of “Kindred,” a novel by Octavia Butler, this January and February.

“Kindred” is the story of a contemporary Black woman who time-travels to a plantation prior to the Civil War, where she meets her ancestors and is forced to negotiate the life of a slave. This book explores issues of race, power and privilege—all ideas that apply to our current times.

A select number of free copies of the novel, along with the graphic novel version by Damian Duffy, are available at the Public Libraries of Saginaw branches, Hoyt and Zauel, through curbside pickup. The e-book is also available to residents with a public library card.

Four community conversations will be held via Zoom, featuring facilitators who will guide the participants through a series of discussion questions about the book, to beld later this month and in February, during Black History month. These conversations are scheduled for January 28, 6:30-8:30 pm, February 10, 7-9 pm; February 20, 10 am–noon; and February 23, 1-3 pm.  All conversations are free, but participants are asked to register for a session in advance.

This project is based on the work of the Justice Library, which is located outside the Saginaw Art Museum and which loans out books that promote racial justice.  Thor Rasmussen, founder of the Saginaw Justice Library, said, “Learning alongside others through reading, dialogue, and active listening is an incredible way to create connection throughout our community. My hope is that the community read generates empathy and sparks continued efforts to unify our community to work toward racial justice.”

Future projects related to the “Kindred” read include community art activities, scheduled to take place in the Saginaw community in the spring and summer.

Funding for this program has been provided by the Public Libraries of Saginaw. Other collaborators include the Saginaw Arts Museum, the Ezekiel Project, the SVSU Center for Community Writing, and Leopard Print Books.

For more information, contact Public Libraries of Saginaw at (989) 755-9820 or visit the Justice Library website at www.justicelibrary.org to register for one of the book conversation sessions.
