Serena Williams Reveals She Had Fears Of Returning To Court Post-Baby…

With a career spanning 20-plus years, few tennis players — let alone athletes — come close to the awe-inspiring legacy of Serena Williams.

From clinching a record-winning 23 Grand Slam titles, to advocating for pay equality, it’s still shocking that the 36-year-old tennis star’s achievements both on and off the court haven’t been celebrated on screen—yet. But, thanks to HBO, the new mother is about to get her just due with an exclusive five-part documentary series entitled Being Serena.

Ahead of its May 2 release, HBO and Serena Williams have shared the first trailer from the docu-series.

In the trailer, Williams lets fans in on her most intimate moments over the past few life-changing months, including the emotional experience of winning a Grand Slam title while pregnant. She also shares her fears of returning to the court since giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian, and jokes that she and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, are “total opposites.”

“I definitely feel the pressure,” Williams revealed in the trailer. “I’m off my maternity leave…the fear of failing it’s always there.”

As expected of someone with the strength, determination and absolute grit that Williams has exhibited over the course of her career, the short clip ends with this gem: “Without fear, without doubt, without discomfort, what is there for a person to overcome?”

The first episode of the five-part series, Being Serena, airs May 2 on HBO.
